01 - CBR Introduction course
Background
Increasingly, rehabilitation and prevention of disability takes place in the community with the active involvement and participation of the community. CBR advocates among others appropriate technology, the formation of self-help groups, and microfinance business training. These activities aim to empower persons with disabilities and the communities in which they live. The course is based on 6 principles of CBR thinking: inclusion, participation, self-advocacy, sustainability, empowerment and a barrier free environment. Participants discuss the trends of rehabilitation in low- and middle income countries. Service models are compared with socio-political models of empowerment, emancipation and integration of persons with disabilities in society.
Course objective:
By the end of this course, participants will have a working knowledge of all the important aspects related to CBR.
02 - Management and Leadership in CBR
Background
Enablement offers powerful leadership and management training for key persons involved in Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR). This training focuses on developing skill sets that help participants to become stronger, more confident leaders and managers.
General objective
Equip key people in CBR with the necessary knowledge, attitudes and skills to plan, develop, evaluate and scale up CBR programmes.
03 - Training of Trainers (TOT) in CBR
Background
With demands for CBR training growing by the year, it becomes evident that there is an increasing need for more trainers in this field. Besides, the launch of the new WHO Guidelines on CBR in 2010 has put a greater emphasis on CBR, which subsequently means that there is a greater need for high quality training . Among other courses that Enablement offers, the TOT programme is seen as an important step forward to building global capacity in the field of CBR training, which ultimately will have an impact on CBR development and most importantly on the quality of life of persons with disabilities.
General objective
Participants acquire the knowledge, attitudes and skills to develop and implement effective training programmes.
04 - Disability – HIV/AIDS training
Background
International attention to the rights of persons with disabilities is increasing, especially since in May 2008 the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities has come into effect. However, in general governments and policymakers have yet to include disability issues in their HIV/AIDS strategic plans. Even within disability programmes it is not yet common to ensure that clients have access to appropriate information and services related to HIV/AIDS and reproductive health. Local CBR teams, professionals, persons with disabilities and their families share the same fears, misconceptions and risks as the general public with regard to the HIV-virus. They urgently need to receive accessible and appropriate information on HIV/AIDS. The United Nations CBR Guidelines pay specific attention to this subject. The goal of the section focusing on HIV/AIDS is to ensure ‘access for all’ to HIV/AIDS information, services and programmes. This goal involves three key areas: increasing individual knowledge, reducing stigma and discrimination and mitigating the impact of HIV/AIDS.
Overall goal
Mainstream development and HIV/AIDS organisations understand the importance of inclusion of persons with disabilities in their HIV/AIDS programmes.
